We were lucky enough to visit the ICONS festival at the Titanic Exhibition Centre. The festival was the first of its kind celebration Music, Technology and Film.
I spent most of my time at the Inspire stage listening to talks and workshops from leading players on their success stories. Also worth mentioning I sat beside Public Enemy’s Chuck D for the majority of the time- without noticing!
The highlight of the day for me was a question and answer session held by James George. George runs a company called Specular based in New York. It’s main aim is to combine the use of art and computing for entertainment. One of his pieces, a film named “Clouds” was featured in the Sundance 2013 Show case. However, George gave us insight into the downs of the project. He expressed the lack of narrative, something that he always fails at conveying. He expressed the feeling of downfall, how it happened many times, and how he doesn’t know how his business will take off in the future.
His talk featured a lot on computing aspects, and he repeatedly stated the need to combine art with other subjects, such as science and technology. Coming from a science background I can relate to his ideas. I’d love to experiment with the use of reactions as an almost background for animations- the colours generated by reactions such as aluminium and iodine give beautiful purple fogs that would look magical.
